My name is Christine Bailey (previously Pecor). I have been an avid lover of four legged creatures since I could remember! My start in rabbits began one Easter when my grandfather brought my brother and I each a little baby bunny. I remember mine being fuzzy with upright ears. Now, I would say that she closely resembled a Jersey Wooly. I named her Angie. My brother got the male, who was white with red eyes, today, I would say it closely resembled a New Zealand. However, if memory serves me correct they were littermates.
Shortly there after, I recall having a slumber party for my birthday, and a friend who attended named Cindy (I cannot remember her last name! But she had the most beautiful long red hair), purchased my first pedigreed rabbit for me as a gift. That rabbit was a broken black Mini Lop doe. And from that moment, the rabbit bug hit me....
Also during this time at home my Mother had White German Shepherds, a Black German Shepherd and an Australain Shepherd that I did a lot of obdience and agility training with. I do think I was enrolled with 4H for dog as well, but I cannot recall. But during this time I have a core memory of looking through a book my mom had. I was laying on the floor and flipping through the pages of different dog breeds. And there it was, on a two page spread, the most beautiful dog I have seen. A harlequin Great Dane running on a beach. I had only seen one other harlequin, and it was breifly, while watching my favorite Disney movie....can you guess? The Ugly Dachshund! I remember telling my mom that I wanted one, and showed her the picture of the Harlequin on the beach. Her response was, "when you grow up and get your own place".
I ended up taking over an entire stall in my Mom's barn and filled it with rabbit cages, and those cages where filled with Mini Lops. I had enrolled in 4H at the time, and had gone to a few rabbit meetings, but unfortunately for some reason I was never able to finish the yearly projects, continue meetings, or participate in any competitions. During this time I had met a woman who sold me my very first Grand Champion Mini Lop, and his name was Gideon. I wish I could remember who this woman was, her name, rabbitry....something. Here is what I do know: She raised Mini Lops, lived in the Phoenix area, and had a broken black Grand Champion Buck named Gideon. Unfortunately, Gideon died of heat stroke, and if my memory serves me correctly, I called this woman and cried, telling her about his death.
Sometime after all this I entered the naughty teenager phase. Rabbits were no longer my priority, but rebellion & anarchry, and wearing black.............
