What is Degenerative Myelopathy?

DM is a progressive and incurable disease of the spinal cord mainly found in older dogs, especially Dachshunds.  The dog will gradually loose muscle mass & the ability to walk, starting with the back end.  This sometimes leads to difficulties in breathing, swallowing and possible paralysis.  DM is rarely seen in younger dogs,  and is more likely to be detected between 4-14 years, but usually after 8.
Degenerative Myelopathy can be compared to ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease in humans.  The exact cause is unknown, other than it is neurological and hereditary.
Earlier signs of DM would be wobbliness, , difficulty getting up, knuckling and weakness.  There is no cure for DM, however under veterinarian supervision it can be managed with physical therapy and supportive care.
It is not very common in Dachshunds, and most test clear.  However, 1.30% have tested as a carrier with less than 0.1% were noted at risk.  DM can display similar symptoms to IVDD, however they are two separate disorders that require different treatments for a good quality of life.  Although it is rare, it is still best to have a genetic DNA test done if you were looking at breeding.  The risk is small, but it's still a risk.  Two carriers should never be bred together.
